We love bikes. They’re awesome tools for transportation, but even better is the way they bring out the personality, creativity, and expression of their owners. We love artists for bringing out those same qualities in the universe. That’s why we never miss a chance to collaborate with today’s top creators. Our Pure Fix Artist Series are bikes made better. We hand over our handiwork to be arted up by the best, and the results have been breathtaking. This time around we visited Echo Park-based artist Peter Shire. Though Peter is known as a fine artist, ceramicist, and sculptor, his background as a cyclist helped him apply his signature vision to a couple of our Premium models. The finished product is art that will move you - literally.
Spattered in bright colors, Peter’s studio mirrors the vibrance and sense of fun found in his work. The finished bikes look right at home next to paint-splashed tool boxes and cheerfully-colored sculptures.
Seeing Peter transform disparate parts into a coherent whole was mesmerizing. Like the lumber-y smell that hits you when walk into a hardware store, the studio emits an aura of productivity and potential. You find yourself (re)examining everything, looking with fresh eyes and seeing things, not as they are, but as what they could be.
Our eyes never really had a chance to settle - there was just so much to see. Luckily for us, Mitchell DeQuilettes came along and lent us his directorial vision, capturing the sights and sentiments of the studio, and giving us a unique perspective into Peter’s process.
Now that the bikes are done, it’s time to get them out into the world so they can be appreciated! Our Artist Spotlight Series will give folks a chance to make these art bikes their very own, while doing some good in the process. The proceeds from each Artist Series bike will be donated to charity, and first up is People for Bikes! The tireless work they do advocating for safer streets and making biking better in America is unmatched, and we’re happy to contribute to the cause. So, if you need some more art in your life, a new bike, and want to help improve riding for everyone, check out the aptly named Artist Spotlight Series #001 - and get riding!
