On Sunday 40,000+ people took to the streets of Pasadena to experience Old Town the way it used to be - free of cars and bustling with people. Few remember when Pasadena wasn’t a car-town but, before 1900, cycling was king! In fact, the Pasadena Freeway was originally conceived and constructed as the California Cycleway, a raised wooden bikeway running from Pasadena to Highland Park. With the rise of the car (and the SoCal oil and gas lobby), the cycleway died, but Sunday brought a happy reminder of what used to be - and what could be again if we commit to complete streets.
We teamed up with Dog Haus Biergarten to show off our bikes, their brats, and the drink some of the best beers in Southern California. CicLAvia was already raffling off two Pure City bikes, but we figured we’d have some fun and give away a few bikes of our own too.
The Chopaderos stopped by with some seriously savage cycles (think Harley choppers but with the engine swapped out for even more attitude). Despite their intimidating appearance, they were some of the nicest people we met and their passion for bikes is completely contagious. We were also happy to loan bikes to folks that wandered into CicLAvia on two feet, but wanted to experience it on two wheels!
When we finally got riding, there was no shortage of costumed characters (official and otherwise), lively music, and smiling riders. In fact, the only thing missing was the traffic and the rumbling of engines idling at red lights.

There’s just no better way to spend an afternoon than riding with friends through sunny streets, taking in the sights, sounds, and tastes of the city. And, based on the number of times we overheard things like, “This is amazing! When’s the next one?”, “Why can’t the streets always be this way?”, and “We should do this every weekend!”, we’re not the only ones that think so. In short, it was a blast. The next CicLAvia is August 9th, will run from Culver City all the way to Venice Beach, and we can’t wait. Hopefully we’ll see you there!
